What is MOCA-Peds?

The MOCA-Peds Online Assessment Program is a modern approach by the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) for ongoing certification. This program replaces traditional one-time exams with quarterly, web-based questions that help pediatricians maintain and test their medical knowledge continuously. With flexible scheduling and personalized feedback, MOCA-Peds supports lifelong learning, helping pediatricians stay updated and identify areas for improvement as they progress in their practice.

The Transformation of MOCA-Peds

MOCA-Peds has transformed significantly since its inception, evolving to better meet the needs of practicing pediatricians. Originally, pediatricians completed certification through a single, high-stakes exam every 10 years. However, MOCA-Peds introduced a more flexible and continuous approach to certification, offering quarterly online assessments that allow pediatricians to test their knowledge regularly and at their convenience.

This shift was driven by the need for ongoing learning that reflects real-world practice, focusing on continuous improvement rather than periodic testing. The transformation includes immediate feedback on each question, insights into areas that need improvement, and resources for further study. This innovative approach supports lifelong learning, keeps pediatricians current with medical advancements, and reduces the stress associated with traditional, high-stakes exams.

By evolving into an accessible, responsive online program, MOCA-Peds has fundamentally changed the way pediatricians approach certification and professional development.

Is MOCA-Peds mandatory?

Yes, MOCA-Peds is required for pediatricians who are maintaining their board certification. It is part of the ABP’s Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program.

MOCA-Peds Examination Format

The MOCA-Peds Examination Format is designed to provide pediatricians with a continuous, flexible way to assess and maintain their medical knowledge. Here’s an overview of its structure:

1. Quarterly Assessments
The MOCA-Peds program consists of quarterly assessments with 20 questions per quarter, totaling 80 questions annually.
Questions are delivered online and can be answered at the pediatrician’s convenience within the allotted time frame for each quarter.

2. Question Types
Multiple Choice: The majority of questions are multiple-choice, covering a wide range of pediatric topics.
Case-based Questions: These questions present clinical scenarios, helping to assess a pediatrician’s ability to apply knowledge in real-world settings.
Single Best Answer: For each question, there is only one correct answer.

3. Content Areas
The questions are designed to cover various areas of pediatric practice, including general pediatrics, subspecialty topics, and emerging practices.
Content is based on current guidelines, best practices, and the latest research in pediatric medicine.

4. Immediate Feedback
After completing each question, pediatricians receive immediate feedback, including the correct answer, an explanation, and any relevant resources or references.
This helps reinforce learning and identify areas for improvement.

5. Timed Assessments
While there is flexibility in when you complete the questions, they are timed, and each question has a set duration within which it must be answered.

6. Scoring and Performance Tracking
While MOCA-Peds doesn’t use a traditional pass/fail grading system, your performance is tracked throughout the year.
The program provides insights into your progress and areas that may require additional study.

7. Completion Requirements
Pediatricians are required to complete a total of 80 questions per year, with each quarterly assessment contributing 20 questions.
The completion of all required questions is necessary to maintain certification.

8. Flexible and Accessible
Pediatricians can access the MOCA-Peds platform from multiple devices, including computers, tablets, and smartphones, making it easy to participate from virtually anywhere.
The assessments can be paused and resumed if needed, giving practitioners control over when and where they take the questions.
